“A Handbook of Latinx Art (2025).” A New Book Presentation by Drs. Rocío Aranda-Alvarado & Deborah Cullen-Morales

Join editors and authors Rocío Aranda-Alvarado and Deborah Cullen-Morales for a discussion of A Handbook of Latinx Art, a landmark anthology on U.S. Latinx art from the 1960s to the present. Drawing on artists’, critics’, and scholars’ voices, the collection explores overlooked histories, regional diversity, and the evolution of Latinx artistic practice. The book shows how Latinx art is reshaping narratives of American art history.

Dr. Vargas will present his recent research findings examining curricular gaps in Latinx Studies across Hispanic Serving Institutions and their broader consequences, ethnoracial classification, racialization, and Latinx experiences in higher education. Dr. Vargas will reflect on how race data and curriculum shape equity, access, and academic pipelines.
"Queer P’urhépecha Histories & Performances Beyond Borders." A Lecture by Dr. Mario Alberto Gómez Zamora

Dr. Mario A. Gómez Zamora, an award-winning scholar of Native American and Indigenous Studies, explores queer P’urhépecha histories through creative and ethnographic work. This lecture will focus on “An Indigenous Woman Record: Recordando el Pasado de Mamá Lupe,” honoring his grandmother’s P’urhépecha legacy, and “Those who are like that,” an international ethnography examining queer belonging, gender performance, and ceremonial danzas within P’urhépecha communities in Michoacán and California.

Dr. Silot Bravo will show that Afrodiasporic traditions and migrations are central to understanding the diversity of the Latinx and Caribbean diaspora. She explores Afro-Latinx and Caribbean sound, cultural, and spiritual practices as postcolonial strategies of memory, resistance, resilience, and healing.

How can tapestry bear witness to oppression, borders, and collective memory? Internationally recognized artist and master weaver, Jean Pierre Larochette, will speak on the history of dissent and weaving, the mechanics of weaving, and the conception of the collective tapestry project led by him and painter Yael Lurie. They will be joined in discussion by arts and heritage consultant Yadin Larochette, and the evening will close with poetry on themes of dissent and division by Berkeley's Poet Laureate Emeritus, Jesús González.
Faculty Mentored Research Fellowship (FMURF) Symposium

Twelve LRC FMURF teams of stellar faculty and their outstanding mentees will present the results of their year-long collaborations in Latinx and Hemispheric Studies across the humanities and social sciences. Join us in celebrating this last of five cohorts awarded funds to develop undergraduate researchers while supporting faculty mentors.

We also presented the FMURF recipients for the current academic year. The reception was held at the LRC from 4 pm to 6 pm.


"Tailgate" at the LRC

In partnership with the Chicanx Latinx Studies Program and the Chicanx Latinx Alumni Association Bay Area Chapter, we held a tailgate at the LRC to cheer on our California Golden Bears as they took on the Duke Blue Devils in our annual Homecoming football game. We fired up the grill and offered a selection of refreshment options for everyone to enjoy! The tailgate was held a the LRC from 3-7 pm.


"Lorena Gutierrez & The Fight to End Feminicide in Mexico"

In partnership with the Human Rights Center at UC Berkeley's School of Law, we held a screening of a sneak preview of a new documentary by Colectiva Varinia, featuring Dawn Valadez and Rodrigo Reyes. The event featured a conversation between Lorena Gutiérrez, an extraordinary mother fighting to end violence against women and girls, and Omar Gómez Trejo, the former Special Prosecutor for the Ayotzinapa case. The event was held at the LRC from 4-6 pm.

"Espiritismo - Honoring Ancestors and African American Sacred Thought and Practice: The Continuum"
This presentation focused on both research woven with actual lived experience of Martha Moreno Vega's family. Their fortitude in protecting their spiritual practices as systems of memory, knowledge, and survival have survived in a multiplicity of locations including Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and other Caribbean Islands and urban areas in the United States. This presentation took place at the Alumni House, Toll Room at the UC Berkeley campus from 4-6pm.

"Dia de los Muertos"

Thank you to all who joined us at the LRC to be a part of our vibrant "Día de los Muertos" celebration as we honored and remembered our loved ones, while coming together as a community to share culture, tradition, food, and reflection.
We watched a documentary screening of a film by Chicana queer filmmaker Lourdes Portillo, "La Ofrenda: The Days of the Dead" (1988, 51 mins.)and shared pan dulce y chocolate caliente together, along with great conversations and company!


"Celebrating Chicana Legacy Codices"

Thank you to all who were able to join in person or through livestream for an afternoon in conversation with collaborators and contributors of The Chicana Legacy Codices. In case you missed it... link provided below to watch the full event livestream!
These artist books echo the form and spirit of amoxtli codices of the Mexica (“Aztec”) and Maya through their accordion-style design. Each limited-edition book features a reproduction of installations, paintings, and prints by artists whose legacies reach deeply into our communities, enhance collective memory, create new awareness, and contribute to a greater understanding of the rich cultural diversity of the U.S.
Celebrating the Chicana Legacy Codices brings together Celia Herrera Rodríguez, Yreina D. Cervántez, Felicia Rice, Nicole Rudolph, and Laura E. Pérez to reflect on the series.
Presented by Galería de la Raza, The Latinx Research Center at UC Berkeley, Moving Parts Press, and Museo Eduardo Carrillo.

End-of-Semester "Latinx Posada"

A warm thank you to all who joined us for our End-of-Semester "Latinx Posada," a festive gathering where we celebrated the holiday season, honored our Latinx traditions, and closed out the semester together in community. We enjoyed good food, a piñata, mariachi, and great conversation!
This event also featured a Tiendita, where students, staff, faculty, and community members had the opportunity to sell their own hand-crafted items, or those made by others, as a way to support the artists and craftspeople among us during the holiday season. The event was held at the LRC from 12 pm to 3 pm.
