Project Overview:
The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) brings forth a wide range of exhibits, showcasing art from both from its own holdings and the international art community, building upon the Bay Area's rich culture rooted in art and activism. BAMPFA’s focus on modern and contemporary art, and its engagement with UC Berkeley students encourages critical discourse of the world in which we live in today. Due to the nature of work done at museums, my research process for the FMURF program focused on museum and curatorial practice more broadly, with an emphasis at getting a better understanding of Latinx Art in BAMPFA. During my time at BAMPFA I have worked on a number of different projects, alongside senior curator Anthony Graham, giving me insight into the way museums operate as well as the holdings of Latinx art in BAMPFA. I conducted research for art in the current collection, potential exhibition proposals, labels for shows, and a traveling exhibition being brought to BAMPFA. Each project provided insight into the position of Latinx art in the museum, the strides the museum has made and has yet to make.
