Join us for a panel discussion inspired by Little Central America, 1984, a performance by Elia Arce and Rubén Martínez that reflects on the impact of 1980s Central American migration to the U.S. This conversation will examine the civil wars that displaced millions from Guatemala and El Salvador, leading to the creation of “Little Central Americas” across the U.S., the role of the Sanctuary Movement, and the cultural resilience of these communities. Panelists include Arce and Martínez, sociologist Dr. Stephania Canizales, artist, curator and scholar Dr. Mauricio Ramírez, immigrant rights advocate Jose Artiga, and moderator, Roberto Bedoya, Cultural Affairs Manager for the City of Oakland.
Exploring “Little Central America, 1984″ is co-sponsored by UC Berkeley’s English Department, Chicanx Latinx Studies Program, the Department of Art Practice, the Decolonial Knowledges & the Pluriversal University, and UC Berkeley’s Chicano Latino Alumni Association
